(21 days; 12 days strenuous trek through the Karakorams; max elev 4,950m 13 nights camping and 7 nights in hotels )
Spantik, the summit of Golden sunset, is a popular play ground for mountaineers attempting their first 7,000m+ peak in Karakorams. We undertake a 12 days strenuous round trek in the heart of Karakoram, approaching the base camp of this beautiful peak on forth day of our trek. This part of the Karakorams is visited by a very few adventurers so we get a glimpse of the romantic wilderness of Karakorams. This trip was developed after our exploration in 1997 and ever since it was offered in 1998, continues to attract visitors.
Itinerary DAY 01:-Arrival Islamabad Welcome reception on arrival at Islamabad airport , transfer to Hotel. Afternoon City tour. Trek briefing with the tour leader in the evening. Overnight at Hotel.
DAY 02: -Travel to Skardu In the morning you will be transferred to Islamabad airport for flight to Skardu. This flight is subject to weather. Alternately, we may take two days drive to Skardu, on Karakoram Highway. We shall stay overnight at Chilas on the bank of Indus. Overnight Motel.
DAY 03: -Free day at Skardu Skardu is capital of Baltistan and stands at an altitude of 2278 meters. It serves as the starting point for some of the most scenic and adventurous trekking in the world. Morning visit the city and in the afternoon we will go to the Satpara Lake (6 miles) from the main twon. Overnight stay at Motel.
DAY 04:-To The Track Board soft top 4x4 jeeps for 8/9 hours drive to Arandu (3165m) overnight stay at camps.
DAY 05: -Arandu to Bukken 6/7 Hours trek along Basha River from the snout of Chogo Lungma Glacier. It takes one hour to cross the northern lateral moraine of the glacier. Across the glacier its 4/5 hours walk on green meadows of Bukken. Overnight stay at camps. (3380m)
DAY 06:-To Hurmal 5/7 Hours walk with view of the perfect pyramid of Spantik Peak (7027M), which guards the head of the valley, to Manchikera another summer settlement. Along the Ablation valley between lateral moraine and the mountain to the summer settlement Hurmal. Overnight at camp. (3760M)
DAY 07:-To Bolucho Pass through the summer settlement of Gharincho and a small Lake and continue 4/5 hours walk with magnificent views of Spantik and Laila Peaks. Overnight camp on a green pasture of Bolucho (3955m)
DAY 08: -To Laila Base Camp Cross the Chogo Lungma Glacier, we walk for about 20 minutes on nasty snout of glacier until we reach the smooth, white central part of the glacier, and turn southwest up the Haramosh Glacier to Laila Base Camp. (4360m, 6/7hours)
DAY 09:-Rest Day At Laila base camp. Free day here for exploration & acclimatization. The area is also famous for its precious stones production, try your luck.
DAY 10:-To Spantik Base Camp Full day excursion to the base camp of Spantik. A strenuous 6/7 hour round trip trek over rock and ice. DAY 11: -Trek to 4800m Peak Five to six hours trek to climb a peak about 4800m for very good panoramic mountain views. Over night camp at Laila base camp. DAY 12: -To Haramosh Base Camp. Four to five hours walk up the Haramosh Glacier, with view of the Haramosh Pass ahead, the last one hour is of crossing big rocks and crevasses, requires some rope work. Overnight camp on a bed of rocks.
DAY 13: -Top of Haramosh Pass We leave camp at about 4 am to climb Haramosh Pass (4800 m), walk on the Haramosh Glacier and crossing many crevasses. After about two hours we are threatened by avalanches coming down from the left, so we move across the glacier towards the north side and continue up. The final ascent involves a steep walk on snow and ice . At one point we will need to use 20 meters fixed rope as well as crampons and ice axe. At the top of the pass you will find good views of Haramosh (7,409 m) and Laila Peaks. Below we can see Kutwal Lake.
DAY 14: -To Kutwal Lake. The descent on the Kutwal Lake side is very steep. We need a rope to get down the first 40 meters of so across the snow. After four hours, we reach grass and trees from there it is an easy walk along the mini glacier, down to the shepherds huts at Kutwal Lake, Camp at green spot of Kutwal Lake (2600m) six to seven hours hiking.
DAY 15:-To Iskary Walk down from the Lake through green pasture for one hour to cross the glacier and then down to Iskary summer village at about (2050m). Overnight camp.
DAY 16:-Dassu Walk down the right side of the mini Glacier and cross the Baskai stream to the shepherds summer settlement of Gure. Along the water channel down through trees and fields to Dassu and camp for night stay.
DAY 17:-Back to Civilization (Gilgit) This is your last breakfast at the camp. Board on soft top 4x4 jeeps for Gilgit. Transfer to Hotel and enjoy the shower. Meals and overnight stay at Hotel . (2/3 Hours Drive)
DAY 18: -A Picnic in Naltar Naltar is a two hours 42 km drive from Gilgit. Full day Picnic in lush green Naltar valley. Naltar is heavily wooded with pine, spruce, birch and juniper. Naltar village, at 2880 meters, has an Air force Ski Training base. Naltar Lake is about 12 km from the village. The Lake is a Startlingly green pond about 200 meters in diameter. Drive back to Gilgit. Overnight stay at hotel.
DAY 19:-Drive to Shrkool. Drive on Karakoram Highway along the Indus river to Sharkool. Dinner and Overnight at Hotel. (10/12 hrs. 380 km)
DAY 20:-Drive to Islamabad. Drive to Rawalpindi en route visiting Taxila, the former capital of Gandhara Civilization. We visit the archaeological remains of a monastery (Julian ) a city (Sirkup) and the museum. Continue drive to Rawalpindi transfer to Hotel, farewell dinner at typical Punjabi restaurant.
DAY 21: -Fly home Transfer to airport for departure flight.
