Lumbini, one of the World Heritage Sites, is the birthplace of Lord Buddha. A small town in the southern Terai plains which is 306km from Kathmandu. Lord Buddha was born in 603 BC in Lumbini. The restored garden and sorroundings of Lumbini have the remains of many of the ancient stupas and monasteries. A large stone pillar erected by the Indian Emperor Ashoka in 250 BC bears an inscription about the birth of Lord Buddha.
