Gosainkunda Trek

Description

Gosaikunda is situated at an altitude of 4380 m high and Gosaikunda Lake is one of the most famous pilgrimages of Nepal. Every year thousands of people trek to this glacier lake during the full moon festival in the month of August. Gosaikunda Lake is a very famous holy lake for the Hindus and the Buddhists. The Gosaikunda trek passes through varied landscapes ranging from evergreen forests, cascading waterfalls and turbulent streams to alpine grass and barren mountainsides. This trek provides excellent views of snow-capped mountains, picturesque valleys and glimpses of the exotic 108 holy lakes, combined with diverse ethnic culture. Besides the famous Gosaikunda Lake, other lakes in the neighborhood are Nagkunda, Bhairabkunda, Saraswatikunda and Surajkunda.
According to the Hindu mythology, when the Gods churned the primordial ocean to produce elixir of eternal life, the poison was also produced simultaneously. To save the universe from this poison, Lord Shiva drank it scaring his throat blue in the process. To cool down his burning throat, Lord Shiva struck his trident into the rock creating three springs which ultimately resulted in the formation of beautiful lakes. Finally, Lord Shiva drank the water of the Gosainkunda lakes and got rid of the pain.
